How to file an income tax return online?

Maroof HS CPA Professional Corporation provides a broad range of income tax services in Canada including personal income tax preparation, corporate income tax preparation, U.S. income tax services, and professional tax advice.

During the busy tax season, we offer convenient online tax return preparation services. Initially, it was an arrangement to minimize physical contact during the pandemic. Subsequent to the peak pandemic, nowadays, many of our existing clients actually prefer to follow the same smooth, flexible, and convenient way.

Our online filing services are available for both Canadian and U.S. taxes.

File your Tax Return in Five Easy Steps

We prepare and e-file your personal income tax returns in Canada in five easy steps:

1. Fill up the inquiry form

Start by filling up the inquiry form.

Our inquiry form gathers all the necessary information we need to quote the time and costs involved. While filling up the inquiry form, please indicate your preferred time as well.

You can start the inquiry form by clicking here.

Once, you agree to the quote, we send an engagement letter, followed by invoice, and access to a secure portal.

2. Get a Confirmation Call for your appointment

We shall call you back and confirm your appointment at your preferred time.

In Case, if your preferred appointment is not available, another time is proposed. We then confirm your online appointment for tax preparation. We also confirm the price for the services at the same time. Our prices follow transparent time-based charges that we estimate based on the initial inquiry. Unlike others, there are no surprises, unless some material information is missing. Our quotes always match the final invoices.

3. Tax Return Preparation: Verify your Identity & provide information

As a professional accounting firm, we must verify the identity of all our clients before electronically filing any income tax return.

How do we verify your identity, please find more information here.

Prepare all the information beforehand and organize all your documents to avoid any delays so that we can stand by our quoted charges.

We then prepare your income tax return. We discuss your tax situation in detail with you and prepare your income tax return.

4. Review your income tax return

Once we prepare the income tax return, we upload it to a secure portal.

We avoid sending it by email and prefer to upload it on our portal. However, if you authorize it, we can send the password-protected file of the income tax return by email as well. Take as much time as you want before confirming all the details. If there is any information you would like us to revise, you can ask us. Revised income tax returns are uploaded to the portal (or emailed).

5. Sign your Income Tax Return digitally & get a Notice of Assessment

Once you have reviewed your income tax return, we send you an authorization form T183 to authorize us for the electronic filing of the individual income tax return. You must have an email ID in order to electronically sign your tax return.

Once you sign off the form T183, we electronically file your individual income tax return with CRA. Depending on your choice and authorization, we shall be sending you Express Notice-of-Assessment (if available) right away.

Identity Verification Process

(For new clients only)

We verify your identity using one of two methods:

Method 1: CRA My Account

If you have access to CRA my account, identity verification is quick and easy.

  • Login to your CRA account and authorize our BN.
  • Provide a copy of government-issued photo identification showing your name, date of birth, and address. For example, a driver’s license, passport, or permanent residence card. You can upload this document on the portal.

For corporate tax returns, please authorize our BN using CRA my business account instead, and provide photo identification as mentioned before.

Method 2: Without CRA My Account

If you do not have access to CRA my account or CRA my business account, you have to follow the below step.

  • Provide two pieces of identification.
    • One of them must be a government-issued photo identification, showing your name, date of birth, and photograph. For example, a driver’s license, passport, or permanent residence card.
    • Another document must show your address. For example driver’s license with address, lease agreement, credit card statement, or utility bill.
  • A video confirmation to verify submitted documents. We use different ways to connect with our clients such as Zoom, Google Meets, Webex, Whatsapp video calls, or phone calls.

For corporate tax returns, we still need to verify the identity of the person providing information and authorizing the electronic filing of tax returns.

Additional verification for U.S. Tax Returns Electronic filing

If you intend to remotely e-sign e-file authorizations, the Internal revenue service (IRS) requires a knowledge-based authentication (kba). If you have difficulty verifying through KBA, you must have access to a printer and a good-quality photo taking device.
